What is H?

Short answer: "H" is short for "mate" / "bro" / "hey you" — it comes from saying "hey" really quickly.

How it works

On site you'll hear things like:

  • "Oi, H, grab the ladder."
  • "You right, H?"

It's basically:

"Hey""'Ey""H"

Over time it just became a habit in tradie talk — quick, no-name-needed, friendly but casual.

Why not use names?

On busy sites:

  • You don't know everyone's name
  • There might be 5 guys called Dave
  • You just need to get someone's attention fast

So instead of:

"Excuse me mate, could you please…"

It becomes:

"H, gimme a hand with this."

Is it rude?

Not at all — it's actually kind of friendly-neutral:

  • Not as close as "mate"
  • Not rude like "oi, you"
  • Just very casual, very Aussie

You'll hear similar stuff too:

"Boss""Big fella""Champ" (careful — can be sarcastic)

So yeah — when someone calls you H, they're just being quick and friendly. And that's exactly what the app does too.
